i think it's quite possible that one ought to be free to use a word, but that it still does not remain good practice to do so.
if one genuinely does not care anything about what others think, as the OP suggests, then there is no reason to ever speak with another human being.
political correctness for it's own sake is an empty gesture. learning to moderate one's own langauge, to be aware of how one's expressions are making others feel and think....that is the opening in to the possiblity for community.
