The problem I saw immediately with this is that in the case of self defense or protection one rarely has time for a great amount of thought. If I make the wrong wise crack in the wrong bar and someone comes at me with a pool cue, I don't have time to give it any thought. I either react or I get a pool cue broken over my head.
