250 posts or more and you have to join the cult. Don't worry, initiation doesn't hurt... much.
There's a FAQ somewhere that explains it all. You get mod approval if you're not a drooling idiot (and they'll even make exceptions for the drooling part.. or they did in my case, anyway) and then after 250 posts you get a lil picture to call your own. Then you can change it every three days to confuse the hell out of everyone.
