Really, it's just like any other potentially deadly form of entertainment. Gun owners, parachute jumpers, etc. take a lot of similar risks for the payoff of a rush of some kind.
A lot of responsible people have fun times riding motorcylces, while a select few folks end up as visual aids in a driving class.
