The water bottle mehod has worked best for me as well. Any time the cat does something bad, you spray them and they will eventually stop. The important thing, as has been mentioned, is to do it immediately so they don't get confused as to what the bad action is. Clapping works equally as well if you don't want to use a water bottle.
