I was 7 (1976-77) when my parents starting leaving me home alone ... it really depends on the kid. I know some 15-year-olds that I wouldn't let out of my sight.
Go with your instinct ... you know your child best.

Everyone remembers their childhood as an innocent time. The 1970's were really no less scary than the 2000's. We just have a sensationalized media to fuel our fears now.
