I am the Service Manager of a Canadian Tire store and for several months I have been pleading with my boss for more staff on the counter. The dept is open from 7:30 am to 9 pm and I have 2 full time service writers and myself to cover 6 14 hour shifts. The techs in the shop work every other day from 8-9 and love their shifts and for a while I had the writers working the same shifts( m-w-f one week and t-th-s the next) with me working 5 8-5 shifts.
The real fun started right after I changed the shifts to the same as the rest of the store, either 8-5 10-7 or 12-9 so that we all worked together and overlapped shifts allowing for ample help and breaks. My most experienced writer gave his notice ( found a job with better pay and was sick of working understaffed) and while my other writer was on vacation he found another job closer to home and came back to work only to give his notice. This left me trying to hire 2 new writers and get them ready to work with customers while maintaining a great level of service. The first 3 new guys I have hired have done all the computer training and put in 1 day on the counter and promptly quit( the job is fast paced and very demanding ).
Finally we reach the moving in part of the story----- I am now in a position where I have to work all the shifts m-sat 7:30-9:30 by myself. How do I get new people hired, trained and ready to work while I am doing the work of 2 service writers and trying to maintain my department and deal with my techs and their issues.
My last question is this---- since I am on salary and will only get paid for 40 hours for working 84, how do I get paid and what is the best way to get a raise out of this adventure. Keep in mind that these shifts allow for no breaks or meals, as there is nobody to spell me at the counter.
Hoping to survive the next couple weeks---- Neddy
