If the check engine light is not one, I highly doubt it's a spark/electrical issue. If it's not the fuel filter, the next place I would look towards is the fuel pump. I'm not sure if that has an in-line pump or an in-tank pump, since I've never messed with it on that car. If he needs me to look in the service manual, post up and I'll find out, or he can just follow the fuel line, lol.
