The 2.0 has one coil, with wires to each cylinder. Check the coil pack, and the ignition output stage. VW's are good for electrical problems in general, and these are good places to start. Fuel pump can be an issue too sometimes, but ignition related things more often than not. On that note, check the ignition switch, too.

Are you sure the newer ones are that way? I thought for sure they had one for each cylinder. I've worked on so many cars in the last two years I could be going
though.
