Well I agree that the hardware could use some help, and it is getting some help. OSX already runs on an x86 platform (ie. intel processors).
I think apple has made it's processor moves very well...Starting with motorola then moving to IBM, then on to Intel. I think moving to an x86 based platfor will definitly open up doors for the mac OS to use more powerful processors like the xenon line or even AMD's mighty Optetron line.
It would not surprise me if Apple has their archetecture running on an AMD platform too.
