I don't really have a say in this, since my country dispatched a thousand or so soldiers there, and we're not likely to get engaged there for that long. I think however, that when things come to a situation where Americans will have to ration anything in order to support the war effort, they would have effectively lost the war by then. Something like that can only be an attempt to minimize imminent losses.
