I'd go with the IPod because it will have music with it - -and you will have it for more than just your trip. the downside to the laptop - -it's steal-worthy, and if you buy a cheap laptop, after the trip would you really want to use it?
Don't forget to pick up some power adapters too -- you'll want to be able to recharge your laptop in the hotel.
