I'm not questioning your understanding of the term, you've stated that you're not really a fan so I don't expect that you've heard many of their more obscure tracks.
My own opinion of Daft Punk... I like about 20%, hate about 20% (especially the Discovery album) and the rest... it just doesn't really do anything for me.
In fact, the ones I like the most are Daft Punk remixes of other peoples tunes or other peoples remixes of Daft Punk tunes.

The rant was there because I see it happening and hear it all the time, not just on this thread. People around here (where I live) hate when they say it accidentally cuz they know a lecture is coming
You're right I probably haven't heard any of the obscure tracks.. but if only a few of their tunes could fit into the techno category then they still aren't techno producers
