You get what you pay for. I guess it's POSSIBLE to get a great matress for $500 or less, is it LIKELY though...
When I was younger I didn't care, I could sleep on the floor and be fine, and slept on a paper thin less than single size matress all through college. Hence my bed right now is a relic of those days, a cheap used Goodwill special that I got for $75. 5 years ago I didn't care, now I hate it, to the point where I'm saving up to drop 3k on a king sized Tempurpedic, my wife and I both have back trouble and the cheap matress amplifies it x100. At least once a week I have to sleep on the couch because I can't get good sleep on that bed, it sucks. The knockoffs are much much cheaper but I don't know if I'd trust them, the Tempurpedic has a hell of a reputation behind it.
Basically you have do decide, is it worth it to invest in something good that will last for 15-20 years, or can you live with a cheap temporary solution that might start causing you back pain a few years from now.
