Could be a player/codec issue. Do store-bought (non mp3) music CD's play?
You don't need the cd audio cable. It's mostly vestigial unless your equipment is ancient. I wouldn't expect you'd find a box that needed it less than 5-7yrs old. Just open device manager and check properties for your DVD drive. Make sure "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" is checked.
