Hehe, I saw one of those crawling underneath my couch one day and wanted to kill it, but it was already gone and I was too lazy to search. I've never seen it since. The only insects I allow to stay in my basement are the spiders in unseen locations because they eat up the other insects.
Anyhow there's no reason to be afraid of those things.. even if it bites it's not going to kill you, and will only cause you minor distress. I say you should've just whacked it with the big end of a tissue paper box or something, when a slipper doesn't quite do the trick that is what I use.
I live in a basement by the way, house insects are usually harmless afaik...
