Upgrading RAM in Old Computers

I have a four year old Dell P4 Computer with 384MB of RD RAM. I would like to upgrade to more RAM, but RD RAM is extremely expensive (~$550/GB) and I don't have that much money. Can I put DDR SDRAM in it? I will post more info on the this computer when I get home from work.

I also have a very old gateway computer (E-4200) that is running PC100 RAM (which is expensive). Does anyone know if you can use cheaper RAM (ex. PC2700 DDR RAM which is 17% the cost of PC100)? Thanks for your input.

Mark.
