Anyway, all these shoes are are backless sandals. "Flip-flops" is probably not the correct term to use in describing this sort of footware. They have become accepted, across the board, by females age 16-28, then typical demographic most interested in current fashion. I know that, for example, the high school that I consulted for had to change their dress code rules - because too many of the female teachers were wearing these shoes to class. Fashion is changing...who would have though 10 years ago that jeans and a sport coat would be dress-casual?
Anyway, people are blowing this way, way out of proportion. If it were men who wore this, then maybe that'd be a fashion no-no. But these are young, college-aged women. Moreover, this is a woman's athletic team, meeting the president because of athletic achievement. To me, it would seem strange to have them dressed in ball gowns or suits. They still looked nice after all, and showed proper respect.
That being said, if attire directly correlates to respect, I'd only meet Bush if I were clothed in socks and sweat pants.
