A grinding noise from a HDD normally means that it's dying. Just go by another 2.5 inch HDD and switch them. You could probably use the dying HDD in a 2.5 inch inclosure and have a nice portable drive for efficent file transfer. I wouldn't want to keep crucial data on the dying one for obvious reasons.
There is another possibilty that the grinding may just go away. I had a 120 GB Western Digital and it would make a grinding noise, and the system would lock up for a second or two. That problem went away though, and I still use it today.
