I live in a relatively conservative university town, I couldn't believe the feeling I got when I first dyed my hair blue, I went from being a littile shy I guess, to walking down the street meeting everyones eyes because I knew they were looking at me, and suprisingly enough the best comments I got were from older ladies (60's and up) and the worst were from middle aged men.
I was nineteen when I did this, so it was probably more accepted, but it was a feeling like I'd never had before, it was amazing to have that much control over a part of my life.
I highly recommend doing something that makes you feel special and gives your rebelliousness an out, after all its only hair, it will always grow back and if you don't like it you can always change it.
Its not actually all that hard to do by yourself, and I've found that for me if I bleach my hair and dry it without conditioning it and then put the colour on it seems to soak in better. I put a plastic shopping bag over my head and then just do whatever I was going to do, then rinse it out whenever I get annoyed that I can't lay down, there really isn't a maximum time on it.
The one problem I've had is that it will stain when its wet, or if you sweat a lot at night, so I use old pillowcases for the first week after dying, and dark towels. The shower will look discusting (and purple) when you're done, but any cleaner with bleach takes the stains off, even out of silicon if you let it sit for a few minutes.
Sorry this is so long, good luck, and enjoy it!
