People treat their bookshelves like a trophy case. It's usually out in a place where visitors can see them. The bookshelf could be located in a back room or a bedroom but I mostly see them in living rooms. As if to say "look at all that I have conquered!"
But in all fairness, yes, my book case is in a place where all visitors see it too.
