I think the publicly ran liquor stores were the reason the provincial government hiked up the taxes so much, and in typical government fashion, now that the publicly owned stores are gone, the tax still remains.

I also remember when you could only purchase liquor in the gov't run stores in BC. I ran a cold beer and wine store in the Okanagan and holy crap were we ever busy in the tiny tourist town I lived in! It was a mad rush, too, to get your off sales before they closed at 11:00. (Still the most stupid law they ever passed, IMO).
