You know what, anniversaries of this kind are very personal things. You should probably check with him to see if he wants it celebrated in any particular way.
I know that for me, on the one-year anniversary of my quitting smoking, the best gift I got was lurkette telling me how proud she was of me. I didn't need a big certificate to hang on my wall--besides AA will give him all the symbolic token items he'll need.
Just let the guy know how much you admire and appreciate him, how much his strength inspires you, whatever is there for you to say to him. That's really all he needs, if you ask him.
