When I'm trying to sleep I need dead silence, black darkness and cold. Any sound at all and I can't reach dreamland. As for ambient sound during waking hours, I don't listen to music often unless I'm in a real Pink Floyd mood so mostly the sound would be from the television to which I have a firm addiction. So I dunno, sound for the sake of sound I can do without but I do like my time listening to and/or watching television or talk radio. I don't think its so much the sound but being engaged in the stories.
