They really dont have to prove it. Example: Assuming your Eclipse is a manual tranny lets say you change the clutch to something else that may add in performance. Later on your transmission takes a shit and they find that you changed your clutch. The work will be denied on the spot and they will ask you to pay for the repairs. Mitsubish is NOTORIOUS for denying claims. Ask any Evo owner. Being that this is a new model they will be looking closer at ANY claims that come thru early in the model year. That applies to any manufacture when new models are released.
