little update: it crashed again. Luckily when I panicked yesterday I had emailed Dell before I called them. They had already sent me a new hard drive and it got delivered today! I was going to return it, thinking I did not need it. I am so glad I didn't.
and guess what? I was able to install it, Windows, and all my drivers all by myself!
