I will say that I honestly think just pure exercise is the way to go. You've said 3-5 times a week at the gym, but how long has this been going on. It takes time to get into shape, then time to turn an inshape body into a really healthy one.
Also please be sure when exercising that you work the groups out correctly. Fat can be lost in a lot of areas.. don't just try to lose it in one place at a time.. work your whole body. Do upperbody and lowerbody in rotations. Like Upperbody mwf and lowerbody tr etc.
