Thats actually a bandpass box you have them in. The woofs sit in a sealed enclosure and fire into a ported one tuned to a very specific frequency range. They go super loud within the specified range, but have litte output beyond it. It is also harder to hear the woofers stressing because there is the "buffer" of the box to contend with.
