well, as groundbreaking as Aquinas was in establishing some of the logical/reasoning underpinnings of Christian doctrine... he never really started from scratch.
that is to say, Aquinas assumed God and worked backwards to find a rationale.
for those who say that religion and philosophy are incompatible (who, i think, are most certainly mistaken), Aquinas cannot be considered a true philosopher. certainly a Scholar (with a capital "S"
) and logician, but not a philosopher.
it's is ex nihilo or nothing these days.
