When you went into a room, and said, "I like this, I like this," the director would cut and say "Find something you hate." I think a few things are planted in the rooms as well, although I have no way of knowing for sure.
Although the choice isn't scripted, the
reasons for choosing who you did ARE scripted. So are the rejoinders from the people who aren't chosen. They are definitely things you probably wouldn't say, like "your room is a pigpen," or something like that.
There are a lot of retakes, if the director didn't like your inflections, or body language, or whatever.
They also tell you what verbiage to use. It's not like they hand you a script, but what you say is worked out just before (or during) filming, kind of on a seat-of-the-pants basis.
Also, you don't really go on a date with the person you choose. They just make it look like you're going to.
