I was scammed on ebay back in 1999-2000 for a PC. It was a very professionally run thing based in Florida with helpdesks and call centres for tracking your "order". That is, until one day it all went dead, checks cleared but no PC. There was a big thing on it on the TV and the FBI was involved. I have since left the US and put it down to experience.
My own fault for being gung-ho about the dot com boom at the time...
