I remember something about treaties that were broken so the market could get unfettered access when the american authorities mistakenly allocated land for reservations that wasn't completely worthless. I heard a story once about american naval vessels off the coast of japan in an attempt to force the country to open its borders to american trade under the threat of artillery(not directed at our own citizens, but illustrative of the moral character of capitalism).
