Mal says it best. Also, if you don't brush your hair enough, you will lose hair in the shower. Simple as that.

I use Neutrogena's Triple Moisture line as I have very coarse, thick, wavy hair. Do exactly as Mal said, and do the cold water rinse (and Mal, that's no old wives tale, that's a fact--cold water DOES seal the hair cuticle). You should select a shampoo/conditioner combo based on your hair type. Is it coarse? Curly? Thin? Thick? Wavy? Straight? Fine?

Also, getting a good leave-in conditioner can be helpful--a light leave-in you can also use with your normal conditioner without weighing your hair down can help get some of the tangles out (example: Infusium's leave-in spray). Secondly, using a hair tie does wonders for preventing wind tanglage (I think I just made up a word). Make sure to use elastics with no metal. Metal is very bad for your hair.
