I've often thought sending young Canadians to less prosperous countries for a length of time would open their eyes to how good we have it here. Unfortunately, most don't see other countries and as such, they spend time bemoaning how hard it is to have a good life here and that they don't get the support they need or deserve to have a fulfilling life.

I've always liked the idea of mandatory public service for youth (i.e. 18 to 21). You have to serve the country for 18 months to 2 years. You can either join the army or serve in a some sort of service in an underdeveloped nation.
In return, you get four years of free University (or something like that).
