If you want to work your arms, buy a shinai. They use them for kendo.
Using each hand, with a firm grip on the stick, cut from ceiling to floor, using the natural range of motion in your shoulder. Do not touch either the ceiling, or the floor. Do 100 reps with either arm, and then switch to cutting in an X pattern, from top right to bottom left, up, then top left to bottom right. 50 reps of that. Do this every other day for a month, and you'll look like Popeye.
