I recently got my hair cut a lot shorter than it was and I have this piece of advice for you - consider how much time you'll be willing to spend fussing with it for it to look right. If you're not used to having a "hairstyle" you might not find that you're willing to spend the amount of time it requires.
I had fairly plain, long hair for just about all my life and now I'm having to experiment with a few different cuts and haven't really found one that works for me yet. My first one was kind of like the first picture pinkie posted, and now it's more of a layered, chin-length bob but it's still not really flattering I think. My next step is to let the layers grow out a little and get it cut again, maybe more like that first picture sweetpea posted. I don't know if you're like me, but I'm too much of a tomboy at heart to spend half an hour in front of the mirror making my hair perfect in the morning, so for me it has to be all in the cut.
The thing I think I've figured out is, the hairstylist I've been going to is layering my hair so that it's really smooth and even, so it naturally falls into kind of a formed shape, like a mushroom cap kind of. I don't really like that much, I've decided, so if I'm going to have layers they need to be more "chunky" or something. Hope that helps.
