I'll second the layers and the hilights. Change up your hair color- perhaps try a lighter shade of brunette. You can use the stuff that washes out so you can play around with the colors until you find one you really really like. I like the style that sweetpea suggested. I actually dyed my hair "Tawny" last night, so now it's like dark mahogany, and I swear it's the neatest thing i've ever seen!
