All in all this is no different that broadcast television. No doubt you've heard the adage; "Your TV's role is not to entertain or inform you, it's role is to sell you sponsor's products."
Your (and my) free email service is the same deal. Whether it's Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo (or a thousand others) since we're not paying for the service someone else has to pick up the bill, and in this case it's MS and their sponsors.
I feel the same way you do, but I found my life is a lot easier if I just don't get too worked up over it.
