I had the same pattern of treatment as amonkie. Pap, with abnormal results, second Pap with still abnormal results, THEN colposcopy. The second Pap is to confirm the results of the first because it's easy to get abnormal results when there's nothing wrong.
IF you end up with a colposcopy:
Ask them for the codine when they ask to you to make an appointment for the colposcopy. My Dr called it in to my pharmacy and gave me like 4 pills (which I appreciated for the cramping. They recommend that you take it 30min-1hr before your appointment. Mine recommended that I take 4 advil as well.
Take a pad with you too as the stuff they swab you with will drain out later and it's black and purplish - don't want that spotting your clothes.
One note of consolation. I had two colposcopies but during the second one I had fewer abnormal cells and it wasn't nearly as bad because they only scrape where they see any abnormal cells.
p.s. HPV for me lasted just over a year from the time they found it to the time I was declared clear. My last Dr said that it's so extremely common and that some women even contract it and get over it before they realize they've even had it.
