Actually, identifiable metallic hydrogen was produced in a laboratory setting for the first time in 1996, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It required pressure in excess of one million atmospheres and lasted about a microsecond. The results of that experiment have led scientist to theorize that there is actually more metallic hydrogen at the core of gas giant planets than previously suspected.
