I recently visited Australia for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I stumbled onto this program and I found it pretty amusing. I don't see what the fuss is about. You're not supposed to take it seriously. It's a sitcom. Just like the sitcoms we have here. The american students in that article must have been uptight republicans. (They're from Kentucky after all, a state full of republican supporters) Anything that they watch on television that isn't in their realm of "values" is pretty much devil worshipping as far as they're concerned.
The problem with most americans is that we have a sense of entitlement. The majority of people think that everything in the world is supposed to conform to them. They think that the world revolves around America. Not the other way around. So when they stumble upon something that's foreign and unfamiliar and not what they expect, they cringe. Hence, the "wary" feelings talked about in this article. Reading it didn't surprise me at all. I would expect that kind of response coming out of Kentucky.
By they way, I really enjoyed my time in Australia. You have a beautiful country down there. I'd like to visit again someday.
