"I'm so tired of this shit!" Laura screamed at her parents as she spun around and ran out the front door. She tolerated them too much; their fighting and mood swings. She especially hated it when one of her parents would give her permission to do something whereas the other would not, and become upset - she wasn't sure if they were doing it to properly raise her or just to piss the other parent off - they both did this at different times. Sometimes, they would both be mad at eachother and take it out on her. This was one of those times.
Her father was abusive and her mother was emotionally damaged. Psychologically, she knew if she didn't escape soon she would be damaged for life. Her mother was constantly trying to make her feel as if her father's abuse - mentally and physically - were her fault. Her arms were still sore from his punches from almost a week ago; the bruises had just begun to fade.
Now was time to execute her and Leo's plan. She had everything she cared to bring with her at Leo's house. They were leaving to move across the country. To escape, get away. There was nothing that could keep her here any longer. She didn't want to stick around and live with her parents, if she did she may not live long enough to see old age.
'So what if I'm only seventeen, I'm practically an adult!' She thought as she arrived at Leo's window and tapped gently. He pulled up the blinds and made a movement indicating he was going to let her in at the front door...just like he had for the past 4 years. He was such a great guy that Laura could not imagine Leo not being in her life. He was her best friend.
"Hey," Leo said, opening the door and letting her come in, "we've a bit o' a problem."
Leo looked handsome as usual with his lean physique, slightly muscular, and dark hair and eyes. He was wearing a t-shirt and jeans and his loosely curled dark hair was held into place with gel. He softly smiled at her and she smiled back.
"What's up?" Laura said.
"I went to rent the truck to move us today," he began, "apparently any trip longer than 2000 miles isn't covered."
"Covered?" I inquired.
"Yeah...the guy behind the counter even told me that they have restrictions on their insurance coverage, then printed this out -" he paused, handing me two sheets of paper stapled together at the corner, "we're s-o-l, as it stands today."
I looked at the paper. At the bottom, hand-written, was the phrase "I'm sorry, but we can't insure you for a journey like that." Over on the left hand side of the page the words 'California', 'West Coast', 'Over 2000 miles' and 'Restricted/Unavailable' were hi-lighted in bright yellow.
Laura found she couldn't stop her tears, as they flowed down her cheeks. Leo walked over to her and put his arms around her.
"We'll find another way, Laura, don't give up hope. We'll find another way."
