This can be accomplished with hollow gold nanospheres. Even more interesting is that if you change the thickness of the walls of the spheres they can change color from these crimson or violet colors, or even become completely transparent like water. Totally clear gold.
Edit: Also, gold and silver nanospheres are currently being studied to help restore sight to people who are visually impaired in certain ways.
