As a driver, I would tend to agree he is the best of the new Nascar. He doesn't play games, is pretty damn consistent, even overcoming lap losses and avoiding collision. He doesn't get very whiny often( although one race last year, he did whine to his crew about Jr getting help, while he 'had no friends out here')
He has been called Nascar's most intelligent driver, although listening to him in interviews makes my skin crawl-articulate he is not.
I myself am a Jr. and Waltrip fan-always liked the Waltrip brothers, remembering Darryl from years ago when watching races was sporadic at best. Jr. needs to get a fire in him, Waltrip is a risk-taker. Jimmie Johnson, give him a few more seasons and he will give Gordon a good run for his money, I think.
The name of the game is consistency, communication with the team and thinking behind the wheel at all times-Gordon has that sewn up, no doubt. ( And not winning at only 4 tracks, although he never didn't place top 10 in them all at some point, is pretty damned cool-even if I don't actually care for the person too much).
