It wasn't always just black people, but people sure as hell like to think so. Romans held slaves that were of all sorts of backgrounds, and they were mostly white for the first half of a century. It was just easy for Europeans and Americans in the 17th-19th century to aquire slaves from Africa because we had guns and they didn't.
