The main conflict for me here is I would say I snoop when I monitor my daughters use on the computer. I check her history, cookies and such, I also have her msn messenger logging to a file she is not aware of. This is technically snooping. I do it to monitor influences and occurrences for safety and moral purposes, just the same way my father snooped in my room when I was a kid. He did it to see where I was at, he never used anything against me that he found, I was upset he snooped but ultimately I had to accept that anything he did find, I shouldn't have been doing it!

OK,
I need to qualify my previous answer. I did snoop on my daughters when they were teenagers, but I was very up front about doing it. I installed parental control software and logging software on the computer and demonstrated that I could find out everything they did. Our telephone billing was also set up to log all calls. While I rarely looked at the logs, I think knowing that dad could check up on them kept them out of trouble.
Is it snooping if you tell them you are doing it?
