You leave so you don't escalate a situation that doesn't need to be escalated. It's one thing to take it to a jerk who is getting in your face. It's another thing to start swinging on a loved one who is this case (male v. female) is smaller, not as strong, and not inflicting serious harm. There is no honor is beating the shit out of a woman, even if she deserved. There is honor in punching the jerk who thinks it's straight if he hits his lady.
