Well, it does have a different connotation. "The Smashing Pumpkins" implies that they are pumpkins who smash things, or using slang, that they are very impressive pumpkins. "Smashing Pumpkins" indicates the act of smashing a pumpkin, or that they may be smashing pumpkins. I doubt it's possible for me to sound any nerdier right now.
