That's all true Phage, but when you compare an existing, cheap and proven system (dumb mines) then the guys who balance the budget look at the excuses I gave and use them to stop the rollout of the new stuff.
I'd welcome them as it would allow the US and others to use mines with a clear conscience and prevent desparate or deluded national or military leaders from attacking others with minimal own casualties or manpower requirements.
I think they're a good idea.

The metal storm thing is one of those technologies that's a good idea, but where they've said after prototyping it "Ok, now where can we use this technology?" Whereas a mine built from scratch is simply a mine and nothing else and is thus designed better for the job.
