I love the Ford Escape. I rented one in Vancouver last summer. beautiful, easy to drive, comfortable, lots of space, good mileage, and nice styling. It has a boxy look that a truck should have, not that designer/steroid small car trying to look like big truck look.
I have looked at buying a hybrid, but the are $5K more expensive, and the loaded one already is 34K with the V6, front wheel drive (i don't want four wheel drive).
I don't think that over an ownership lifetime the 5K will be an econimc reason to purchase this machine. maybe when prices drop more, and are more in line with conventional vehicles.
